My Top Products: May

Standard

So once again I thought I’d do a little round up of the Beauty Box products and other purchases that really delighted me over the past month. Here goes!

I ❤ Make Up Palette in ‘I am Powerful’ (from my Make Up Revolution haul, RRP £5.99)

image

This was one of my favourites from the mound of stuff that I received when I went crazy on http://makeuprevolutionstore.com
The lipstick is a bit naff but the eye shadow shades are great for creating sultry, smoky effects. If you fancy getting one for yourself the palettes are reduced to just £2.99 on the website at the moment. Go, go, go!

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Or Dry Oil (as featured in my May Look Fantastic Box, RRP £21.00)

image

This was a lovely little addition to May’s Look Fantastic box. It will be great to moisturise and nourish the skin during the summer months whilst adding a gorgeous subtle golden sheen.

Mirenesse Mattfinity Lip Rouge in ‘Paris’ (featured in my May Birchbox, RRP £21.00)

image

I’m all about bold matte lip colours at the moment and this shade by Mirenesse is particularly striking. The formula is moisturising so it feels comfortable on your lips and it stays put for a while as well. I’m not sure if I would be willing to part with £21.00 for the full sized version but I am really happy with the sample that I received!

Me Me Me Enchanted Eyes Dual Ended Eye Wand in ‘Midnight Storm’ (featured in the May Glossybox, RRP £6.95)

image

I was really impressed with the pretty blue shades featured in this no-fuss eye pencil. It is great used as a liner to create a maximum impact look that is a bit more interesting than your average black liner.

The Beauty Crop Lighting Crew Highlighting Cream (featured in the May Lip Love Bag, RRP £12.00)

image

This silky smooth cream adds a lovely sheen to cheekbones and other areas you wish to highlight.

Nails Inc Gel Effect Nail Polish in ‘Hyde Park Place’ (featured in the Latest in Beauty Heart Essentials box, RRP £14.00)

image

I was really impressed with the professional finish of this polish, particularly since I am a novice at polish application. The shade I received in the box was great but there are plenty more to choose from in the range. I definitely may need to invest in one or two more!

Michael Kors Lip Lacquer in ‘Dame’ (from http://cohorted.co.uk, £18.00)

image

I had been coveting this stunning lipstick for some time and the fact that it was included in May’s Cohorted Beauty Box made me all the more bitter that I had failed to secure one! I decided to splurge on the lipstick anyway and it really is just gorgeous. Aside from the amazing packaging, the shade is actually a lot more wearable than it looks. It has a semi sheer finish so you can gradually build up the colour to your taste and it feels so luxurious on your lips. I am definitely in love!

Kneipp Herbal Bath Back Comfort Oil (featured in the Latest in Beauty Heart Essentials box, RRP £9.95)

image

Perhaps an unusual product to find in a Beauty Box, this oil worked wonders for soothing and calming my back pain and tense muscles on both occasions that I used it. I can really see this becoming a bathroom essential for me since I love taking baths to unwind and forget the stresses of the day.

Well those were the products that really impressed me over the past month, although my Beauty Box subscriptions have provided many more products that I am sure I will get ample use out of. I can’t see myself giving them up just yet!

Make Up Revolution Mega Haul!

Standard

image

When I spotted on Instagram that Make Up Revolution were giving shoppers £5 off their orders over £30 during the Bank Holiday Weekend I immediately felt a splurge coming on. This budget brand is great for adding a bit of colour to your make up bag and I was spoilt for choice when I took a look at the site. I had heard about the brand’s new Iconic Pro Lipsticks and I thought that I’d treat myself to one of those and a few other bits and bobs but i’m a sucker for a bargain so when I spotted a half price section on the site menu I set about browsing! Make Up Revolution have produced ‘Collections’ containing key products that are available for just £10, half the price that you would pay when purchasing the products individually. There are four limited edition collections available; Naked to Dusk, Spring, Summer and Go to Heaven. Each collection contained products that appealed to me and I was so torn between which one to go for (and also feeling rather impulsive that day!) that I ended up ordering all four. This does mean that I have a few duplicate products but they will make great little gifts for people, or most likely be donated to one of my lucky sisters! The sets are such incredible value that I don’t mind at all.

Here I will provide a run down of what is included in each collection.

Spring Collection

image

The Wonder Palette in ‘Sin’ contains 16 eye shadows in a variety of shades from neon yellow to metallic bronze and is a great way to try out some new colours that you might not usually go for. The ‘Go!’ Palette is a collection of 6 eye shadows, 2 blushes and a highlighter in really wearable natural shades and the ‘Go! to Hell’ Palette contains 18 mean and moody eye shadow shades perfect for creating a dramatic smoky eyed look. The other items included in the collection are an eye primer, an Amazing Lengths mascara, a black Kajal liner and a vivid blush lacquer in ‘Heat’. This is the collection to go for if you really want to focus on playing up your eyes.

Summer Collection

image

This collection contains the ‘Go to the City’ Palette featuring 6 eye shadows, 2 blushers and a highlighter in more vivid shades than the ‘Go’ palette from the previous collection. There is also the ‘I am Sexy’ Palette which consists of 6 eye shadows and deep red lipstick. The eye shadow shades are really wearable and the palette is more compact than the others so it will fit easily into most makeup bags. This set also contains 2 shades of the vivid blush lacquer in ‘Heart’ and ‘O’Boy’. I am really excited to try these out as I often don’t bother with blush and I think that liquid blush is a good way to get a naturally flushed look. There is also The One Blush Stick in ‘Pink’, a LipHug Lipstick in ‘She’s up all Night’, an Amazing Care Lipstick in ‘Love Pink!’ and an Eye Dust pot in ‘Levity’. Both lipsticks are nice shades of pink without being too gaudy and its always nice to have a lip product that moisturises your lips as it colours like this amazing care one. The eye dust is a nice shade and loose powder shadows are great for building up a strong colour when applied with an eye shadow brush.

Naked to Dusk Collection

image

This collection contains the previously seen ‘Go! to the City’ Palette, the ‘I am Powerful’ Palette which is quite similar to the ‘I am Sexy’ one but has a darker lipstick with it for a different look. Also included is the ‘Go! To Heaven’ Palette which consists of 18 neutrally coloured eye shadows, 2 Eye Dust pots in ‘Indirect’ and ‘Cautious’, a LipHug Lipstick in ‘Save Me From Yourself’, the previously featured vivid blush lacquer in ‘Heat’ and a Wow Stick lip pencil in ‘Heart of Glass’. The LipHug and Wow Stick are in quite natural shades so would work well with the shadows from the Go! To Heaven palette for a fresh daytime look.

Go to Heaven Collection

image

Most of the items in this collection feature in the previous ones but there is also a different shade of LipHug, ‘I Wasn’t Mixed Up’, an Eye Dust pot in ‘Starless’ and a Baked Eye shadow in ‘Blue Planet’. I particularly liked the look of the last 3 items which is why I went ahead and ordered this collection even though it contains so many duplicates. ‘Starless’ is a dark grey/black shade so will be perfect for a dramatic smoky eye and the Baked Eye shadow is just gorgeous. The swirls of colour within it create a really nice effect when applied.

Iconic Pro Lipstick in ‘You’re a Star’ – £2.49

image

So this is the lipstick that I originally logged on to check out, leading to my splurge! This is one of the nude shades from the collection (it looks darker in this pic than it actually is!) and it provides long lasting coverage and colour whilst being comfortable to wear. There are 20 shades available, including 5 mattes.

I’m sure you will appreciate why I found it so hard to choose just one of these collections and at £10 each they all provide amazing value for money if you fancy adding a bit if colour to your make up collection!

BeautyCrowd Haul Take Two!

Standard

image

Less than a week after receiving my first BeautyCrowd order I was excitedly unpacking my second box of goodies! There is so much choice on this site that something new is always catching my eye. For instance, I knew I HAD to have one of the gorgeous Nicka K Eye Shadow Quads as soon as I saw them! Let’s start there with my review:

Nicka K New York Quad Eye Shadow in ‘Alpine’ – £4.95

image

These Quads offer great value and an incredible choice of colourways including a vibrant neon ‘Napa’ option. I chose to play it relatively safe with this set. All Nicka K products are really sleekly packaged and look far more luxe than their prices would suggest. The powders are well pigmented and with this combo you can choose to go classic with the Purplish Grey or Bronzey Orange shades (interesting descriptions I know!) Or add a bit more drama with the Dark Blue or Deep, Plummy Red. I was really impressed with the whole package, particularly as the Quad is so reasonably priced.

Next up I tried out the Absolute New York Ultra Slick Lipstick in ‘Fantastic’ – £3.95

image

I was looking for a nice nude shade and this lipstick certainly fits the bill. It has a buttery consistency and glides on easily leaving an impressively pigmented colour. You also get the scent of sweets when you take off the lid which was a lovely surprise! The colour is not especially long lasting so I will have to pop it into my bag for touch ups but the nude shade suits me well so I am really happy with it. Another great price too!

Next up are the L.A.Colors Jumbo Eye Pencils in ‘Pool Party’ and ‘Summer Love’ – £1.95 each

image

These fun, chunky pencils are great for adding a flash of colour fast. They are vibrant and contain a touch of glitter for a really cute summertime look. I use them as liner for the most striking effect, either just adding colour to my lids at the lashline or using them to line underneath my eye as well. Sometimes you just want to have a bit of fun with your eye makeup and that’s where a good nude lipstick like the Absolute one works well when they are combined. At just £1.95 these are an absolute steal and I may well invest in a few more shades for my make up bag. I actually only ordered one on this occasion, the other was the item that was missing from my previous order when it shipped. I had already received an email confirming that it was to be sent in this package. So lucky that I had already made another order so that I could save them a bit of money on shipping costs! Haha.

For the remainder of my order I decided to stock up on some essentials. BeautyCrowd has recently added Barbara Hoffman’s range of make up accessories and since they are all reasonably priced I decided to give a couple of the brushes a go.

Barbara Hoffman Silver Acrylic Lip Brush (pointy), Silver Acrylic Eyelash Brush and Cosmetic Pencil Sharpener – £3.95 each

image

I was in need of a new sharpener after misplacing my existing one and having to rely on one built into the lid of my Model Co eyeliner for all of my pencils so purchasing this one was an easy decision. It comes with a plastic dome fitted to the top so you don’t have to worry about making a mess with your sharpenings if you are using it whilst out and about. You can sharpen till your heart’s content then empty it when you get home. I always have to buy one of these dual sharpeners as I own so many chunky eye pencils such as the L.A.Colors ones.

A Lash comb is another essential for me to rescue my mascara if it becomes a bit clumpy upon application. This one is dual sided and provides you with a brush as well which is great for taming your brows.

I have never really seen the need for a lip brush before, preferring to apply my lipstick straight from the tube or use the applicators provided with glosses and stains, but since trying the Colour Hybrid Lip and Cheek Mousse from my April So Susan Lip Love bag, I decided that owning one might be a good idea to help with more precise application of lip products where the consistency means that things could get messy otherwise! This brush is tapered at the end so you can keep things nice and neat. Both brushes look stylish and are comfortable to hold, and the price is once again very reasonable.

So that’s it for my latest little BeautyCrowd splurge. I just love this website! I will try to hold off from placing yet another order so soon but I have already been browsing the site again and placing items in my basket in preparation!

My Beautycrowd.com Haul

Standard

image

Have you guys checked out the new BeautyCrowd website yet? It is chock full of unique and affordable make up and beauty brands with new goodies being added all the time. This little haul arrived on Thursday and I’ve already placed my next order because I am so impressed! Here’s a quick run-through of my picks:

Milani Illuminating Face Powder in ‘Beauty’s Touch’ – £8.00

image

This is the product that first attracted me to the site and inspired me to have a little splurge; it’s just so damn gorgeous to look at! I had been after something to add to my fuss free morning routine to give me a wide-awake, healthy looking daytime glow and I thought that this would be perfect.
I applied it with a nice big kabuki brush for an all-over glow and it really did brighten up my complexion with only the slightest hint of shimmer (I’m not a big fan of it so I was grateful for that!). In addition to being used all over, this can also be used as a blusher and highlighter so is a great value for money multi tasker. The other two shade options are just as lovely so I definitely may be investing in the set at some point!

Next on my list of new everyday must haves was the Milani Clear Wax Brow Shaping Pencil – £4.00

image

As I start work at 7am most days and love my bed too much to get up at stupid o’ clock to apply a full on face of make up every morning I have been trying hard to create a basic work look that takes roughly 5 minutes to achieve. Sadly this means that my brows tend to get neglected! Enter this brow shaping pencil. It’s amazing how much better your brows can look if you just take 30 seconds to smooth them down and neaten up any unruly strays with this clear wax. It has definitely made the fuss free make up cut with me!

The final Milani product from my haul (boo!) was the Power Lip Gloss Stain in ‘Cabaret Blend’ – £6.00

image

Wow, I’m in love! I can honestly say that this is one of my favourite lip products from the many that I have tried lately, and there really have been a lot! Firstly, the shade is just beautiful. It’s a deep, sumptuous plum and as soon as I applied it my face just came alive. The second thing to note is the fact that it is a gloss AND a stain. Most of my stains are matte and when you are wearing them day in, day out they can dry out your lips. Not to mention the fact that sometimes you just need a gloss for that full on glamourous look! Well with this baby you get the best of both worlds. The colour is vibrant and long lasting and the formula leaves your lips feeling nourished. Another thing to note is the clever design of the product, which comes complete with a built in brush and a twist base, so it’s easy to control how much gloss comes out and easy to apply to your lips. I really am impressed with this and I have just visited the site yet again to pick out which shade I am going to try next!

Next up I decided to try out a few products from a really affordable brand, L.A. Colors. First up, the Chunky Lip Pencil in ‘Orange Cream’ – £2.50

image

A lip pencil is a great product to keep in the bottom of your handbag for on the go, hassle free touch ups and this one is really lovely. I chose the shade ‘Orange Cream’ because I really like the idea of brightening up my look for spring and wanted to try something a bit more daring than I would usually go for. At just £2.50 and with 7 pretty shades to choose from this is a really inexpensive way to venture out of your comfort zone and experiment with something new. I’ve got to say I wasn’t sure that I could pull the orange off but I was actually delighted with the result! The pencil has a smooth, creamy texture and application is effortless, providing a quick pop of colour whenever you want it. The pencil has a twist base so there’s no need to worry about having to sharpen it either.

The next product I went for was the L.A. Colors Scented Nail Polish Remover Pads – £1.95

image

I have received a lot of nail polishes in Beauty Boxes lately and I find it a real pain having to keep removing them again before work. These nail polish remover pads make light work of the task and the idea to make them scented is nothing short of genius. I detest the harsh smell of most polish removers and not only are there 6 fruity scents to choose from (I went for zesty lemon) but these pads are also acetone free so they are kind to your nails. If you are wearing a light shade of polish one pad should be enough for all 10 nails whereas a darker shade or multiple layers may need 2-3. Never the less, at £1.95 for a pack of 30 pads this is definitely an affordable option which has the added bonus of making your hands smell lovely when you’re done!

The final L.A. Colors product in my package is a Matte Lipstick in ‘Maroon’ – £1.95

image

I must start by saying that I was a little surprised to see this product when I opened the box because it wasn’t actually part of my order! After experiencing a delay in receiving my package I contacted Customer Services via email and was informed that the hold up was due to the fact that one of the items that I ordered was unavailable and that they had held the entire delivery back rather than dispatch an incomplete order. Well this is fair enough but when I opened my package and checked the packing list inside, the eye pencil that I ordered was still notably absent (as confirmed on the packing list) and this lipstick seemed to have been inexplicably supplied in it’s place. It is the same price as the pencil so i’m not sure whether it was supplied in error, as an alternative or as an extra gift by way of an apology for the delay with my order. Time to contact Customer Services again I think!
When I first saw the lipstick I thought that the shade would look way too dark on me but seeing as I had received it and I have been drawn to matte lip colours lately I decided that there was no harm in giving it a try. To my complete surprise I actually loved it! The lipstick has a creamy formula and is enriched with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera to help keep your lips moisturised. At just £1.95 and with a choice of 11 shades these lipsticks are another way to try out something out of your beauty comfort zone and are also a good introduction to the matte lips trend. I am grateful to Beauty Crowd for the chance to try out a product that I probably would never have picked for myself, whether it’s inclusion in my order was intentional or not!

The final product in my haul was this adorable set of Popbands in ‘Meadow’ – £8.00

image

I already use these brilliant no-snag hair ties every day having received one in a Latest in Beauty box and picking another as one of my choices in a Love Me Beauty box and when I saw the beautiful colour options and designs available through BeautyCrowd I couldn’t resist treating myself to a new set. Popbands are soft, stretchy and hold your hair securely in place without making kinks, so they are ideal if you want to go from office to bar and not have to worry about the state of your hair when you let it down after a day at work with it scraped back into a ponytail! Simply let it loose and give it a quick brush then slip your Popband on your wrist and hey presto you have great hair and a cute little bracelet to brighten up your outfit! You don’t have to worry about endlessly replacing your hair ties when you know that one can always be found on your wrist!
After being constantly moaned at by my hairdresser for the state of my hair due to scraping it back with bog standard elastic band style hair bobbles, I was really happy to find a product that was kinder to my hair and it is now in much better condition because of them. There’s no going back now for me, only on to discovering cute new Popband designs and colourways!

So that’s it for my review of my fantastic haul from http://beautycrowd.com check out the site for yourself and dare to try something new!

A Touch Of Velvet

Standard

image

While I’m putting the finishing touches to my April Glossybox review I thought I’d do a quick piece on my favourite lip product at the moment, the gorgeous Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet! I was first introduced to this lipstick when I received the ‘Nude-ist’ shade in a Latest in Beauty box last month (It’s on the left, the other shades are ‘Peach Club’ and ‘Happy Nude Year’). As soon as I applied it I was impressed by the colour and texture and as the day wore on it became apparent that it had pretty impressive staying power too! I am usually a no-nonsense tinted lip gloss or Clinique Chubby Stick kind of girl but this was definitely love at first application and it has encouraged me to make more of a feature of my lips these days. I love the matte effect of these lipsticks but by far the best thing about them is their longevity. The fact that you can slick them on at the beginning of the night and not have to worry about endless touch ups after every drink is a godsend (I’m still pretty low maintenance at heart!).
I’ve included some snaps of me wearing my current 3 colours to give you an idea of the true shades and effect. I have applied one layer of each shade alongside the natural make up I have been wearing all day to allow the lipstick to take central stage!

Despite belonging to the ‘nude’ end of the shade spectrum, ‘Nude-ist’ still gives a rush of colour and a striking effect without being too try-hard. In actual fact it is quite a pinkish colour:

image

Sorry about the manic expression i’m still working on perfecting the selfie! Haha. As I said I loved everything about this lipstick as soon as I saw it and I became obsessed with owning more shades so when I was doing a spot of online shopping at very.co.uk the other day and I realized that they stocked them I couldn’t resist popping a couple in my basket.
Next up is another from the nude collection, ‘Happy Nude Year’:

image

This one is a lighter, more candy pink tone than ‘Nude-ist’ and is lovely for a natural, pretty daytime look.

The final shade from my own collection is ‘Peach Club’:

image

I have been looking for a nice coral lip colour for some time but I wasn’t sure if it would suit me so when I saw that there was a peachy Rouge Velvet shade I knew I had to try it out. Although all of my current shades are pretty subtle, this one probably gives the best idea of the potential that some of the stronger shades can have. Now I have tried and loved these I will be working my way up the colour spectrum towards the more daring ones!

The best thing about these lipsticks is the fact that they glide on smoothly without you having to worry about them clinging to any flakes or dry patches that you may have on your lips like some of the longer lasting lip stains can. I think this is due to the matte liquid lipstick formula being thicker than most stains and therefore able to disguise small imperfections rather than highlight them.

So whether you’re after a subtle but long lasting natural look or something more daring, give these lip colours a go. They retail at around £8.99 but many stockists have offers on Bourjois products at the moment! http://superdrug.com has them included in their 3 for 2 offer while http://boots.com is currently selling them at 2 for £14. They are also 3 for 2 at http://very.co.uk at the moment as well (priced at £9 each) if you already have an account!

Check out the full collection of shades here http://www.bourjois.co.uk/catalog/make_up/lips/lipstick/rouge_edition_velvet and see if any of them take your fancy…

The Quest for Cohorted…

Standard

Today was a date for the diary for me and many of my fellow Beauty Box enthusiasts. Cohorted.co.uk invited eager shoppers to pre-order their much coveted boxes up to 3 months in advance from 6pm this evening. I had a reminder set on my phone weeks ago and as soon as the alarm went off at 5.55 I logged on and watched the clock counting down.

Finding myself faced with 3 separate pre-order buttons rather than a bulk-buy option I was faced with a dilemma. Should I go for the May box, meaning that my chance to experience one of these luxe boxes would be tantalisingly close? Or should I play it savvy and go straight for June or July, assuming that the majority  would plump for May, therefore increasing my odds of securing at least one box? I decided to be smart and try for July.

The website was maddenly slow due to the volume of traffic from like-minding beauty fiends clamouring to get their hands on the holy grail of beauty boxes, but after a lot of refreshing and reloading I breathed a sigh of relief as the July box was successfully added to my basket.

Flushed with success I decided to take a chance and try for the June box as well and my excitement was exacerbated further when the message pinged up that it had been successfully added to my basket too. This was enough for me so I headed to the checkout. A quick login, shipping address check and paypal transaction later (thank goodness I was already a member!) and confirmation was received that I had successfully pre-ordered the June and July boxes.

By the time I managed to get back onto the May pre-order page the boxes had sadly sold out but oh well, as Meatloaf said, “two out of three ain’t bad!”

Look out for my very first Cohorted Beauty Box review coming June 2015!
