Look Fantastic 1st Birthday Edition Beauty Box: September 2015

Standard

image

It’s Look Fantastic Beauty Box’s 1st Birthday and to celebrate they have treated their customers to a special box packed full of new discoveries. Not everything included here is to my personal taste and I have to admit I have been left slightly bemused by all of the OTT glowing box reviews that I have seen on social media but there are definitely some gems in here that I will enjoy using and as always the £15 price tag represents great value for money. Another plus point with Look Fantastic Beauty Boxes is the fact that they are available without a subscription so you can choose to order the boxes when the mood takes you if you have the money to spare, rather than having to fork out every single month.
The majority of the products included are either skincare or haircare so it was easy to combine them in order to try them all out! Below I have briefly explained a little about each product, and how I used them together:

Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash

image

As I mentioned in my Birchbox post, Bliss is a brand that I have always been mildly interested in, though I hadn’t actually purchased any products from their range. This foaming face wash exfoliates as well as cleanses and although it is suitable for all skin types, I have to say that I found using it quite an uncomfortable experience! It also didn’t seem to foam at all as the name suggested it would, but maybe I hadn’t left my skin quite wet enough (the instructions tell you to apply to ‘slightly damp’ skin.

Codage Crēme Gommante Scrubbing Cream

image

I decided to follow the face wash with this scrubbing cream as the ‘toning’ element to my routine but in hindsight it was probably a mistake as it meant subjecting my already tender feeling face to yet more rough exfoliation! Again, the packaging stated that this product is suitable for all skin types but the angry red blotches that had by now appeared on my face suggested that my sometimes as end if I’ve skin was not enjoying this experience at all!

Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum and Moisturizing Sorbet

image

After all that exfoliation my skin was crying out for this next duo by Caudalie. I have sampled a few of the brand’s other products before and have been impressed not only by the products themselves, but by the company’s dedication to using natural and organic ingredients. I smoothed on the serum followed by the moisturiser and my skin felt instantly soothed, although the red blotches persisted for quite a while afterwards!
I certainly wouldn’t recommend this skincare routine when time is tight because the process is quite lengthy and I had to wait for my skin to calm down before I could apply my make up but I think that my skin did benefit from the thorough cleansing and exfoliating treatment in the long run because my skin did feel especially smooth and the surface looked more even afterwards. I will perhaps try this routine again once or twice a week (preferably on my days off!) in order to keep my skin in tip top condition but I certainly wouldn’t use all of these products daily.

Sebastian Penetraitt Strengthening and Repair Shampoo and Conditioner

image

This duo is great for ‘deep cleaning’ colour treated and over-processed hair, removing any product build up and leaving it feeling soft, shiny and manageable. I never use a lot of styling products in my hair but I do colour it relentlessly which often leaves it looking and feeling a little brittle and lacklustre. I enjoyed using this shampoo and conditioner and will continue to do so every so often when I notice my hair looking particularly ‘blah’ but I am not convinced enough to shell out for the full sized versions just yet.

Phyto Phytokératine Extreme Cream Conditioner

image

This is an intensive, leave in conditioner to nourish and repair ultra-damaged, dry and brittle hair. Although I wouldn’t class my hair as being quite that badly in need of a deep conditioning treatment, this cream did leave it feeling really soft and luxurious, plus my fine, flyaway hair was a little easier to tame than usual when it came to styling it. I did like this product, but its not exactly an essential for me personally so I won’t be paying over £25 for the full sized version in a hurry.

TanWorx by Monu Tan Maintainer

image

Somewhat the odd item out in this box, I was a little underwhelmed with the inclusion of this tan maintainer. Mainly because I have no tan whatsoever to maintain! However, it has been designed to be used in conjunction with the entire TanWorx range and I do own the TanWorx Self Tanning Lotion (courtesy of an earlier Look Fantastic Beauty Box!) so if I do get round to giving that a whirl anytime soon I will definitely be giving this product a go to ensure that it lasts as long as possible.

So what did you guys think? I feel like I have become so obsessed with Make Up lately that any box I receive that doesn’t contain any feels like a bit of a disappointment but judging by the reviews and comments on Instagram and Twitter, most customers seem thrilled with this month’s products. The September highlight from me was actually the card within the box, giving me exclusive access to preorder the AMAZING looking Look Fantastic Advent Calendar before it goes on general sale! Needless to say, this was done immediately and I can’t wait for December so I can discover the delights within it!

The Look Fantastic Beauty Box is available at http://lookfantastic.com and costs £15 including P&P. There is also an offer on at the moment where you receive it for free if you spend over £55 on products across the site.

Naturisimo Travel Essentials Discovery Box

Standard

image

Having discovered the Naturisimo website and one off boxes in May when I purchased their fantastic Make Up Discovery box, I excitedly added this box to my basket as soon as it appeared on the site a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, it has now sold out but if you are interested in skincare and make up brands who use natural, cruelty free ingredients in their products be sure to take a look at the site and sign up to their beauty alerts service to make sure that you are notified when their next limited edition box goes on sale! The past two boxes were priced at just £9.99 and they are a great introduction to brands that you might not have heard of or tried before.

Here’s a closer look at the products in this Travel Essentials Box:

image

This Giovanni Shampoo and Conditioner Duo are naturally the perfect size to pop into your bag or case when travelling, and the hydrating formula of the conditioner will help to restore moisture in hair that has been suffering from the drying effects of sunnier climes. In spite of being well under the 100ml airline guideline size for liquids which are allowed in cabin baggage, these 60ml bottles are generous enough to see you through a short break or week long trip and will add that extra bit of TLC to your hair.

image

This Dr Bronner Magic Soap is a true cleansing multi tasker. It is three times more concentrated than traditional soaps so a little goes a long way. It is also great when you are somewhere where you have minimal access to water such as camping or at a festival. A face cloth, a dash of this and a drop of water are all you need to cleanse your entire body. It’s got a pretty nice rose scent too! I have been to festivals in the past and it would have been lovely to have been able to take a product like this. After a couple of days baby wipes just don’t cut it as a cleansing solution!

image

When travelling, whether locally or abroad I never fail to pack some sort of facial moisturiser. My skin is notoriously prone to sudden bouts of dryness and random breakouts and I like to have something to hand to soothe and calm it as soon as I can. All Balance Me products are gentle on the skin and this face cream does a fine job of instantly hydrating the delicate skin on my face. It is suitable for everyday use so your skin always feels in tip top condition and visible signs of ageing are kept at bay. Bonus!

image

While the Balance Me Face Cream is a great regular moisturiser, sometimes you need something a little bit more heavy duty, particularly if you are abroad and your skin is suffering from too much sun. This Barefoot SOS Face & Body Cream will help cool and soothe the skin whilst deeply moisturising and restoring it. This wonder cream is also suitable for skin prone to Eczema and Psoriasis so travelling aside, this might be worth looking into if you are looking for an everyday moisturising cream to help soothe and control either of these skin conditions.

image

I received another of these Caudalie Divine Oil samples in a previous box and it is the perfect multipurpose oil to pop into your travel bag to keep your face, body and hair in great condition when they are in danger of becoming parched from sun exposure. It makes your skin feel silky soft and has a lovely, heady scent too. The sachet of Divine Legs Tinted Body Lotion would be great as a finishing touch to make sure your holiday pins look perfect in your shorts or sundress!

As with their last box, I loved this offering from Naturisimo and thought that it was great value for money. All of the brands on board are great and I look forward to the next limited edition box!

Latest in Beauty: Glamour Summer Edit

Standard

image

This month saw the release of another great one off box from Latest in Beauty, this time a collaboration with Glamour Magazine to create a collection of summer must haves. Latest in Beauty boxes always offer great value for money so when a new one is released I can never resist.
This box contains some great products which I will definitely be getting a lot of use out of. Here’s a closer look at the contents.

Nails Inc Gel Effect Polish in ‘Kensington Passage’:

image

I was thrilled to receive another of these gel polishes since I was so impressed with the last one I tried. This shade is a vibrant pinky-orange which is just perfect for summer. Two coats give a smooth and even finish and this time it had impressive staying power after I remembered to apply a gel top coat as well. If you fancy giving this polish a try at a discounted price enter the code GLAMOUR5 at the checkout at http://nailsinc.com for £5 off your order.

Bourjois Color Boost Glossy Finish Lipstick in ‘Peach on the Beach’:

image

An easy to apply lipstick crayon in another beautiful summery shade. The pale peach is really subtle for a daytime holiday look and the formula feels comfortable on your lips. I am really impressed with this crayon and am eager to check out other colour options.

Balance Me Super Toning Body Polish:

image

Yet another great product from Balance Me. This body polish contains walnut shells and is designed to firm, plump and smooth as it cleanses and exfoliates. In spite of it’s exfoliating properties, the 99% natural ingredients used ensure that this polish is still kind to your skin. You apply it to wet skin so it is ideal to use at the end of your morning shower, helping to slough off any dead skin and leaving your skin smooth and super clean as it dries. I was really impressed with this product as its always nice to get a little help in improving the appearance of your skin when you will inevitably be displaying more of it during the warmer weather. The full sized polish costs £18.00 for 150ml and you can get £5 off your purchase by entering the promotional code SUMMERGLAMOUR5 at the checkout when you buy from http://balanceme.co.uk.

Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Self Tanning Bronzer and full size brush:

image

This is the world’s first self tanning bronzer! Simply dust the powder across your face and a natural looking tan will develop, and last for up to five days. I was really excited by this product but slightly worried that I would suddenly discover that I had turned a wildly unnatural and unflattering colour whilst out and about! I decided to try it out on a day off to be on the safe side. After going about doing some housework for a couple of hours I checked my face in the mirror and I detected a subtle glow. Basically my face just looked quite healthy. I may be brave and try a bit more product next time but I can see this being a great alternative to heavy make up during warm weather when paired with a skin perfecting primer or face cream. I’m going to give the combo a go for work tomorrow!

Eucerin Sun Creme for Face, SPF 30:

image

I have acquired a few suncare samples through my beauty boxes now. It may just save me from forking out for pricey full sized bottles for a while! It’s always a good idea to use a face-specific sun cream to avoid a greasy look and spare your skin from blocked pores and spots so I was happy with this addition to the box. I have fair skin and hair so I rarely use lower than SPF 30, particularly on my face so this cream was a perfect fit. It is suitable for dry and sensitive skin and is also water resistant.

Caudalie Divine Oil and Pixi Glow Tonic:

image

I would recommend both of these products. The Caudalie Oil is great for using on your face and body to combat any dry patches ensuring your skin is always ready for that extra exposure when the warm weather hits and the shorts and t shirts come out! It has a nice scent too and feels luxurious on your skin. I received another 15ml bottle like this one in the Naturisimo Travel Essentials Box which I will be reviewing soon so I have enough to keep me going for a while without having to purchase the full sized product and I can assess whether it will become a big enough part of my life to justify a £27.00 spend. You can use the code GLAM20 at the checkout at http://caudalie.com to bag yourself 20% off if you’re interested though!

The Pixi Glow Tonic is to be used on your face after cleansing to exfoliate, tone and tighten, creating a bright and radiant complexion. I used it for a few days straight and my skin did appear brighter but I have also been trying to improve my diet and drink more water so that might be responsible too! Either way it is a nice little product and since I don’t currently have a toner in my skincare regime I will definitely use up this little sample. You can get £5 off orders over £30 at http://pixibeauty.co.uk by entering GLAMOURBOX5 at the checkout. They have an impressive make up range so have a browse!

L’Occitane Shampoo and Conditioner:

image

I like L’Occitane products but an abundance of samples and gifts from other people have meant that I have never actually purchased anything from the brand myself. To me essential products such as Shampoo and Conditioner, Shower Gel, Soap etc are not worth paying premium prices for, simply because I would spend a fortune having to regularly restock them! So truthfully I wouldn’t consider buying full sized versions of this duo although I am happy to make use of the samples. They have a pleasant scent and contain essential oils to give your hair a bit of extra TLC if it becomes sun frazzled and brittle whilst on holiday.

The final product in the box is a Seekers of the Sun Luxury Temporary Tattoos sheet. I haven’t even bothered with a close up pic of this one because I am so tired of seeing them everywhere. I would never let the inclusion of these things put me off buying a box but I do think enough is enough now. I’m looking forward to the change in the seasons so they won’t seem relevant to anyone anymore!

Well that’s it for my review of another great Latest in Beauty offering. I really was excited by several of the products showcased and more than satisfied that the £17.99 cost of the box was money well spent.

Birchbox: May 2015

Standard

image

This month’s Birchbox has a theme that I was very excited about; Free Your Mind. My box arrived all ready to be coloured in and I set about the task with relish! The box even comes with a cute pack of crayons, but I opted to use my coloured fineliners for a brighter and more dramatic effect. It took me about 3 hours to complete the box and I found it a great way to stop boredom snacking! You can put a pic of your completed box on the Birchbox site to be in with a chance of winning £500 to spend in the Birchbox shop!

In spite of the fact that the box itself is awesome this month its really all about the contents so let’s move onto the reviews. First up, the Caudalie Vinoperfect Tinted Moisturiser:

image

I am a big fan and regular user of Tinted Moisturiser and I have tried a couple of Caudalie products before and been impressed by them so I was really excited to see this in my box. When I applied it however, I was disappointed. I didn’t use a separate moisturiser beforehand owing to the fact that this is supposed to be one itself, but I found it difficult to blend and absorb into my skin, and it left a slight caked-on look. The consistency is more like a foundation than the more fluid formula that you would usually associate with tinted moisturisers and since I prefer a lighter coverage product, this was definitely not a plus point. Also, the shade that I received was ‘light’ and although this is probably what I would usually go for in the absence of a ‘light-medium’ alternative, I felt that it was a bit too light for me, which added to the chalky, unnatural appearance. I will give the product another go after using a separate moisturiser beforehand, but it certainly didn’t excite me based on first impressions. The sample is a generous size though so if it matches your skin tone well and you are after a little more coverage than your average Tinted Moisturiser you may be delighted with it.

Next up, the Mirenesse Mattfinity Lip Rouge:

image

Of the 3 shades that you could’ve received I got ‘Paris’ and I have to say I was very pleased because I had seen this lipstick around and this lovely purpley pink colour is definitely the one I would’ve chosen myself. When I first opened the tube I was a bit concerned by how gloopy the product looked on the applicator brush, but once I wiped off the excess it applied smoothly and evenly and was a beautiful striking shade. The lipstick has a matte texture but is designed to moisturise so it won’t dry your lips out. The packaging boasts of ‘tattoo-like staying power’ and although I certainly wouldn’t go that far, it held up reasonably well as the day progressed. Again, this is a decent sized product so I will be able to get a lot of use out of it before I even have to consider whether I want to shell out the £21 that the full sized product costs!

Next up, the Wah London Nail Art Pen:

image

Over the past few months a regular Birchbox feature has been asking subscribers to ‘choose their sample’ from a selection of 3 products by a particular brand. This month you could choose from Wah London’s Nail Polish, Nail Art Pen and Press On Nails. I don’t really have much inclination to wear press ons and I have received several polishes from various boxes lately so I opted for the Nail Art pen. I received a navy blue shade and the design of the pen makes it easy to draw spots and other shapes freestyle, or the cap can be unscrewed to reveal a ‘striping brush’ to make creating a striped nail a breeze. This is a cute little product to add a bit of fun to your weekend or holiday manicure and is a nice addition to the box.

Next I tried the RMK Point Make Up Remover:

image

When used with my trusty cotton pads this remover made light work of my everyday nude shadow, brown eyeliner and mascara and didn’t leave my face feeling dry or tight. I have already mentioned that I am a Garnier Micellar devotee and nothing else is likely to make me switch my allegiance but sometimes when you have particularly stubborn or heavy make up you want something with a bit more power and this remover was great. Its also a really handy size for taking on your travels since as much as I love my Micellar, the bottle is huge and most definitely not overnight bag friendly!

The final sample I received was the Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray:

image

I have naturally fine, curly hair but I never wear it that way since it dries in a really strange overall shape and turns to frizz if I so much as hold a comb up to it. Any product that promises to create lovely tousled waves is definitely worth a try in my book! I spritzed it onto my damp hair, scrunched it up a bit, left it to dry naturally and hoped for the best. Well the curls certainly looked a bit tidier and better formed than usual but unfortunately my hair barely touches my shoulders and I think that the beach goddess look can only really be achieved if you have
a bit more of a lustrous mane than I do! It is a nice product though and definitely worth a try!

May’s box also contained a bonus Reconstructing Hair Masque sachet:

image

I’m not big on hair products in general but I have tried quite a few intensive treatments recently and it is nice to use something like this weekly to give your hair a bit of extra TLC. It always feels fabulously smooth and silky afterwards and is that bit more compliant when it comes to styling. I am planning to try this after my bath later!

Overall I thought this month’s box was probably the best that I have received since I began my subscription and is definitely a bargain for the £12.95 monthly cost. I welcomed the opportunity to flex my creative muscles by colouring the box and impressed myself with the result!

Birchbox subscription costs £12.95 per month. Details can be found at http://birchbox.co.uk
